Recognized for his graceful and relaxed imagery, Kevin Sturman is a New York based photographer, best known for his work that has appeared in American Vogue since 1999. Celebrities and fashion icons, Mary J Blige, Guy Pierce, Roger Federer, Jade Jagger, Timothy Olyphant, Marc Jacobs, Jennifer Beale, Tara Subkoff, Gilles Mendel and Kelly Wearstler are among his many subjects. His work has also appeared in Town & Country, Vanity Fair, Dazed & Confused and Glamour magazines and fashion clients include YSL, Prabal Gurung, Carolina Herrera, J Mendel and Vera Wang, among many others. Born in Epsom Surrey England, Sturman’s curiosity in photography began as a young boy when his father took it up as a hobby. His interest piqued as a teen during the Cultural Revolution that took place in London. His early exposure to Punk, the Soul Boy movement and the expressive New Romantics deeply affected him and the style and personalities that evolved from those periods formed Sturman’s love for fashion and portraiture. In 1982, Sturman left London and moved to the United States where he honed his technical knowledge of photography at SIU-C and completed his formal education. Next was Los Angeles, where he assisted famed photographers Herb Ritts and Peggy Sirota. It was his apprenticeship with Helmut Newton from 1997-2001 to which Sturman credits his current success, citing Newton simplicity as an ongoing source of inspiration in his style, technique and personal manner. A New Yorker since 2001, Sturman always creates subtle yet clear connections between his subjects and the camera. Sturman maintains this connection is the key to a great photo.
